The most common Transparent Proxies are build using Squid. The client is always in the assumption that it is talking to the original server itself, when it is talking to the proxy server.
Transparent Proxy intercepts all the DNS lookup requests from user and passes on to Rogue DNS servers. Using Shorewall or any Iptable based firewall, we should be able to preform port forwarding of DNS lookup requests to be routed to a Transparent Proxy. The Initial Step of this process is to route all the DNS traffic towards the Transparent Proxy. Now lets understand how we can achieve this.
If any traffic leaks outside of the secure connection to the network, anyone monitoring your traffic will be able to log your activity. When using an anonymity or privacy service, it’s extremely important that all traffic originating from your computer is routed through the anonymity network. If you’ve changed your DNS settings to use an ‘open’ DNS service such as Google, Comodo or OpenDNS expecting that your DNS traffic is no longer being sent to Rogue DNS servers, you may be surprised to find that this can be achieved through transparent DNS proxying.
